Specialists in traditional and heritage properties.

We’re immersed in rejuvenating heritage and historic properties, with an Historic England Listing or otherwise, particularly in the rural villages and hamlets sprinkled throughout the chalk valley downlands surrounding the city of Salisbury.

We have experience in building and property development, extending and converting all kinds of old buildings in the pretty pastoral Chalke, Woodford and Wylye Valleys, as well as in and around towns like Warminster, Amesbury and Devizes.

Re-using & As We Develop & Conserve

We use a combination of traditional and modern techniques, sustainably re-utilising original components.

We source reclaimed materials locally whenever possible. We reuse and recycle so that as little as possible goes to landfill.

Our eco-conscious approach to building means that most of the waste generated on site is recycled - with even the water being filtered and used again.

"We've been battling for a few years with damp issues in a bedroom after substantial storms and driving rain. After some research, I felt the problem was with our old chimney stack which didn't have lead trays and reached out to James. We discussed the issues and solutions which included a chimney rebuild with lime mortar, 2 lead trays and air bricks.

James and his team were outstanding, carefully removing the bricks by hand as the property is thatched, i.e. no angle grinder putting out sparks. As a result nearly all of the bricks were reusable thereby keeping the character of the chimney stack intact. The finished result is amazing.

James and his team are very polite and take immense pride in their work, I would highly recommend them."

"We had an extension executed by James and his team, putting a new room over our garage. It went extremely well, and we are delighted with the outcome.

James' quote was in detail, he visited the site and sent his team round (plumber, electrician etc), so we had confidence he understood the scope. This was far better than other people we approached.

In the run-up to the work we maintained good communications. The materials were ordered promptly, which avoided some of the price rises. The job started on time and was staffed throughout. He kept us well-informed of progress and the next stages.

The sub-trades all respected James and verified that he was an excellent person to work for, who planned their work and things would be ready on time for them."
Michael Crawford
"In our search for a contractor to build our extension we came across James quite by accident. What a find he was.

He is extremely professional, considerate, helpful and above all a really lovely person. The standard of his workmanship and attention to detail is excellent and he is always available for advice on alternative ways to achieve goals at more cost effective prices.

Cannot praise him enough and would not hesitate to recommend him for any building work.

Thanks James - keep in touch."
Ross Owen
"From the outset, James was pleasant and professional. He and his team evidently took a pride in their work and were prepared 'to go the extra mile' to create a garden wall which fits in with our 200 year old cottage.

At every stage he kept us fully informed and, despite horrendous weather and restricted access presenting considerable challenges, through creative problem-solving and re-cycling, he actually saved us money: his final bill was a very pleasant surprise, with a significant saving on his original quote!

We're delighted!"
Marcia Bagguely
"We have recently had a small extension to our kitchen completed by James.

His workmanship is of the highest quality, his attention to detail impeccable and he demonstrated tremendous pride in his work. Despite there being some unforeseen glitches he was able to troubleshoot the problems and find a suitable solution without incurring too much extra cost.

James is a thoroughly pleasant and professional builder who I would recommend for any building work."
Peter Annetts
"We are delighted with the extension that James Palmer and his team built.

The work was carried out to a very high standard. We were kept informed at each stage of the build and James was always available for consultation.

His team of workers were always polite and courteous and we would not hesitate to recommend James Palmer Build."
Tim Sandiford
"I approached James as one of 3 builders who had been recommended to us. His first visit and subsequent estimate and quotation set him apart from the others through the detail, accuracy and clarity he presented. It promised much and he delivered much.

He kept us well informed, was always punctual, exceptionally tidy and producing high quality work that drew overwhelmingly positive comment from passers by and retired craftsmen alike. His high standards were also evident in those who he called upon or recommended for the additional work required to complete the build.

I would have no hesitation in recommending James to anybody."

Turnkey Projects

Aside from our meticulous workmanship, what sets us apart when it comes to heritage property conservation and restoration is that we offer a “one-stop” service for all our projects, large or small.

When we take on a contract we manage the entire project from the ground up. Once you accept our detailed quotation you can, if you wish, leave the site and return to find that all of the work has been completed to the highest specification, on time and in full compliance with building and safety regulations.

One of the reasons that we are increasingly sought after by property owners and architects for bespoke work on listed buildings or those within conservation areas, is that we have a proven record of producing accurate costings and realistic time frames.

Detailed Quotes & Management

Our approach is to professionally survey the site in depth and deliver a quotation with as much detail as possible.

We don't believe in submitting a low quotation in order to win a job; only to add extra costs on later.

We believe that transparency regarding costs is key to maintaining a good rapport with our clients.
